Chapter Thirteen

As we left the Tower House, the pale light and bitter air felt like a small mercy. I hadn’t realized just how suffocating that office had been until now. But the moment of relief was short-lived. Now that we were back in daylight, I could see it properly—Dean Celestine looked drained, the exhaustion in her face even more evident beneath the weak, wintry sun.

“Dean Celestine,” I said, quickening my pace to walk beside her. “I’m sorry. It’s just, I’ve been having more thoughts about the missing people, and how Callon might be behind it all. I didn’t come to you because—well, it seemed like you had a lot on your plate. And I know we’ve talked about this more than once already. I guess . . . I just didn’t want to be a burden.”

“So you chose to go to Professor Kravitz instead?” she asked, stopping short. To my relief, a light chuckle escaped her. “You really do have a knack for the daring, don’t you, Nate?”

“More like stupid, really,” I muttered, earning yet another soft laugh from her.

“Well, I wasn’t going to be the one to say it,” she quipped.

“I really am sorry, Professor. I never intended to drag you into this. It’s just . . . with what happened recently, with Dak, it left my thoughts all tangled. It made me even more certain that Callon was behind everything.”

She gazed at me, her tired eyes full of quiet curiosity.

“Come along, Nate, let’s walk” she said, her voice soft. “The weather is finally starting to warm, even if only a bit.”

From there, we casually strolled down the snow-dusted path, the bare trees lining it in neat rows. We kept mainly to the southern side of campus, giving me a chance to appreciate the old stone foundations as we passed occasional students, all of whom watched us with expressions of great interest. We even crossed through the vast courtyard in front of the Cathedral, but instead of entering the castle-like structure, we circled around its perimeter.

“Um, Professor?” I finally asked, breaking the silence as we headed back down the courtyard. “Are we not going to your office?”

“I simply needed a leisurely walk, Nate,” she said with a small smile. “Sometimes, a slow stroll is just what one needs. And I’ve always had a particular fondness for this side of the grounds.”

I shrugged my shoulders.

“Yeah, I suppose I can understand that.”

We carried on with our ambling, and I was glad to be wearing one of my heavier robes. Despite Dean Celestine’s observation that it was warming up, it was still early February, and the chill was unmistakable. The snow-covered lawns served as a stark reminder of that.

“Professor?” I began, my curiosity getting the better of me. “If you don’t mind me asking, why did you lie to Professor Kravitz back there? Why tell him you didn’t know what I was doing when I was clearly reading his mind?”

At that point, she finally paused, sitting down on one of the many stone benches that lined the courtyard paths.
